Gracie's walk through Wayne
This year I had the pleasure of taking part in another Ithan Elementary right of passage, the "Walk Through Wayne" Each year the Ithan 3rd grade has a field trip to Wayne to "walk" the town and find interesting architecture, landmarks, see historic sites and interview some local businesses about why, when, how and what they are doing in Wayne.
For Gracie's group we scheduled interviews at LuluLemon and the Radnor Township School District Administration building. These were very desired locations since in years past the experiences there were very cool and a high probability of scoring some cool swag.
We started out at the middle school where the bus arrived with the 3rd graders. The threat of thunderstorms had all the parents loaded up with umbrellas and back up plans for what to do when the rain started. Well, we lucked out and the rain held off.
Our group toured around a little to see monuments and the post office, a few landmarks and architecture before heading to our first business interview at LuluLemon. I got a little nervous when we showed up and the manager we had scheduled the appointment with was not there, but a nice lady (Michelle) who has kids in Wayne elementary and has done the walk before greeted us and could not have been nicer to the girls. The girls got a behind the scenes look at store operations (basically a storage closet =) ) and learned why Lulu chose to set up shop in Wayne. Michelle told them about how great it was to work there and some secrets about how they set up the store, etc. Gracie even got to see some "creepy" mannequin parts in the back room...weird.. after moving outside to do the "interrogation" as one of Gracie's classmates called it, Michelle told the girls to come back inside as the Lulu staff has something special for them for visiting the store. Gracie was very excited to see that it was....a chance to pick out ANY Lulu headband in the store...See pic below where she is already wearing it before we left. This was probably the best swag anyone has ever gotten on the "walk" as these are coveted by Main Line's finest Lulu wearing diehards. Very cool and great experience there.
Off to lunch at the Wayne Library, outside seating, pretty flowers and small talk with local folks included. We saw a cute poodle who was out for a stroll, a few postmen with a ready wave and a smile, and of course more sightings of cupolas (that weren't really according to Emily) and mardsen roofs, arched windows, etc.
After lunch we had some time to kill before the appointment at the administration building so we strolled up to the Louella Mansion stope to say hi to a chihuahua and a ferret...yes someone was out walking their ferret! We ran across more cupolas (that again, weren't really cupolas), passed by the fire house, ran into an Ithan group of boys who wanted to brag about the "TONS OF FOOD" they got at one of their interview stops, saw a "street eater" go by that was very loud and finally arrived at the administration building.
The receptionist was ready for us with a schedule of visits to business administration (think tax collector), operations, HR, security, etc. the girls learned about the history of the school district, the admin building being the original one room school house starting in 1896 and how a nice lady named Molly pays for all the iPads and smart boards for the schools. After the first department I had to leave for a work call so I will let Gracie tell the rest of the story there. All I know if more cool swag was on the way as the girls got official district ID badges with their picture on them and some other fun stuff.
